Community Outreach

We don't just help bullied breeds!

Take a look at just a few of the ways that we're helping with our community.

Sterile Feral

We helped Sterile Feral, a group that Traps-Neuters-Releases cats in the central IL area, with a group of cats who were being poisoned in a trailer park. Since they obviously couldn't be returned to that location, we built a kitty-proof room in our heated barn for them to temporarily stay for the winter. Every day we're working on socializing these kitties in the hopes that they can eventually be adopted out. If not, they'll be relocated to a safe, monitored outdoor location.

Kitties enjoying their new room in our heated barn. They love to look out the windows!
Each patiently awaits their turn to be released.

These are just a few of the kitties who will be living safely and comfortably in our cat room, and not adding to the feral population.

"Put down the camera and let us out already!"

Pixie the Blind Horse

We were asked to help Pixie, a Mustang with moon blindness, by our local humane society. Her owner was unable to care for her anymore and there was no space available for her at the HS. We needed to build a special stall for her in order to separate her from our other two equine rescues, elderly Pistol and foundered Marlena, at nighttime. She is being evaluated by an eye specialist and we will then know whether surgery may help her eyes or not. She is bit nervous, but is slowly but surely adapting to her new environment.
She is super super sweet with people, loves apples and carrots, and will rest her head on your shoulder and just soak up the love.

Isn't she pretty?

Pixie and Marlena "face off"!

Pixie's cozy new stall, built especially for her!

Rascal the Pit Bull Goes to College

Rascal, a Hurricane Katrina rescue, was a big hit earlier in the year at fourth grade classes educating kids on dog safety. Most recently, he "attended" college classes at Illinois State to teach students about dogfighting, pit bulls, and the cons of breed specific legislation. He absolutely adores the attention and is quite the ambassador for the breed as he goes from student to student.

"Yay yay yay head rubs!!"

"Nooo why iz you leavin me??"

Rascal goes to college part 2, April 8th!
Rascal goes to college part 3, October 25th!

Fighting Breed Bans

I thought it was definitely necessary to express my gratitude about the assistance and perseverance of Catherine Hedges of Don’t Bully my Breed with the Elgin Pit Bull ban issue.

I remember when I first heard of this happening, I was in a tail spin, I did not know how to begin the fight and could not wrap my head around what was going to happen. Someone suggested that I contact Catherine. I thought to myself “O.k. but they will probably be too busy, etc.” she responded within an hour of me contacting her, showered me with so much information, taught me how to fight, and has been an invaluable ally ever since.  Without her help, I do not know how far I could have gotten. She has helped me get the ammunition I needed to know how to fight the fight. She never gave up and when I started to panic, I would get the “face slap” to bring me to reality to continue. She made sure I never gave up. She was there the whole time.

Catherine, you are a gift to the animals, especially the mis-understood bully breed.

Thank God for you and all you do.

With much admiration and respect,

Lila Lahalih
